About This Track

'Waves' confronts sudden loss and the fragility of life through the lens of two people close to Dan Reynolds. One narrative follows a woman at the threshold of her career, her trajectory interrupted by circumstance; the other recalls a childhood friend whose death left Reynolds absent from a moment he cannot reclaim. The song moves between these two stories of interruption, building its emotional weight through repetition and restraint. The chorus offers a philosophy rather than false comfort. Reynolds sings to "own all your tears and just roll with the waves", acknowledging that life pivots without warning and time offers no negotiation. The bridge sharpens this into a choice: dwell in regret or stay present to the moment at hand, knowing it could be the last. It is a song about mortality that refuses to sentimentalise it, instead insisting on the value of attention to what remains.
