Coldplay is a British rock band formed in London in 1997. The band members are vocalist and pianist Chris Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, and drummer Will Champion. Manager Phil Harvey is also credited as a full member. The group initially performed under the names Big Fat Noises and Starfish. After releasing the EP Safety independently in 1998, they signed with Parlophone in 1999. Their debut album, Parachutes, was released in 2000 and featured the single "Yellow." The album received a Brit Award for British Album of the Year and a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, was released in 2002 and also received the same awards. X&Y, released in 2005, was considered the final part of a trilogy by the band. Their fourth album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, came out in 2008 and won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. Both X&Y and Viva la Vida topped the charts in over 30 countries and were among the best-selling albums of their respective years worldwide. The band is known for their live performances and has had a notable influence on popular culture.
