About This Track

'Fall' finds James Arthur wrestling with numbness and the weight of keeping upright. The track moves through a catalogue of small defeats: childhood wounds, the gap between what he preaches in his music and how he actually lives, the isolation of being unseen despite visibility. The chorus strips back to something elemental, a repeated admission that sometimes he wants to give way, to stop the performance of carrying on. Arthur's voice carries the emotional labour here without melodrama. The song acknowledges the pull of collapse whilst refusing easy answers, sitting instead in the tension between the desire to surrender and the habit of survival. It is a record about exhaustion that does not pretend exhaustion is noble.

"Fall" is a track by James Arthur, from the album YOU, released 18th October 2019. Full lyrics are available below.

Lyrics

Fall

[Verse 1]

I've been beaten and broken and tread upon

I was made to feel stupid when I was young

And they say, "No is the answer to the temptations"

When those demons come rushing, nowhere to run

[Chorus]

Sometimes I feel nothing at all

Sometimes I want someone to hold

Sometimes I carry on

Just to stumble down once more

Sometimes I, I, I wanna fall

[Verse 2]

I teach love is the fluid in all my songs, mm-mm

But then I faked my way through it with alcohol

I speak the language so fluid

Lost in translation

But I guess they don't see you in their camera phones, oh no

[Chorus]

Sometimes I feel nothing at all

Sometimes I want someone to hold

Sometimes I carry on

Just to stumble down once more

Sometimes I, I, I wanna fall

Yeah, yeah, oh, I just wanna fall down, I just wanna fall

Yeah, oh, I just wanna fall, I just wanna fall

Sometimes I, I carry on, ooh, just to stumble down once more

Sometimes I, I, I wanna fall
