About This Track

JID traces the pressure and possibility of self-determination on 'Somebody', a track built around a simple refrain: everybody's got to be something. He moves between boasts and confessions, rapping about early ambition and misdirection with equal candour. The flow shifts constantly, matching the restlessness of someone still figuring out his place. What anchors the song is JID's refusal to pretend certainty. He admits to being kicked out of school, to watching others snitch, to the messy work of learning patience. But he's also precise about what he wants: money, respect earned through craft rather than spectacle, the chance to manifest something real. The production stays minimal, letting his voice and the layered repetition of the hook do the work. By the end, the question of what he'll become feels less like anxiety and more like hunger.
