About This Track

'Tempest' by John Grant is an alternative track from the album 'Love Is Magic' (2018). Its lyrics place a narrator inside institutional spaces, with self-satisfied figures observed from above, then pivoting to an invitation to “Come play Tempest with me”, as the song imagines time spent away from the crowds. The tone is conspiratorial and watchful, with the language of perches and holes in conspiracies giving way to a more playful, coaxing address.

"Tempest" is a track by John Grant, from the album Love Is Magic, released 11th October 2018. The track is 6:32 long. It's filed under Alternative. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 2 articles about John Grant.

Lyrics

Tempest

In the halls and in the churches
They were preening on their lofty perches
And holes in their conspiracies
And they were looking right at me

Come play Tempest with me
Or maybe Millipede
We can while away the hours
Away from the hordes
I've almost reached the yellow boards

I hear the doors of institutions
Opening and slamming shut
They were desperate for solutions
They were drowning in their elocutions

Come play Tempest with me
Or maybe Centipede
We can hang out in the mall
It's where I feel at home
And I don't want to be alone

Come play Tempest with me
Or maybe Centipede
We can hang out in the mall
Away from the hordes
I've almost reached those nasty green boards

Why Matt Maltese rescued ‘Florence’ after once finding it too sincere

Matt Maltese’s 2023 single came from a teenage song he had initially dismissed as too sweet. Its eventual place on ‘Driving Just To Drive’ reflects a songwriter reassessing what honesty can hold.
