'Remember' opens the second side of Lennon's debut solo album, built on a piano riff that had surfaced years earlier in a discarded coda to the Beatles' recording of 'Something'. The song draws its emotional weight from primal therapy, the therapeutic method Lennon pursued during the summer of 1970 with Dr Arthur Janov. It channels that work into a meditation on childhood disillusionment: the moment when heroes fall, when adults reveal themselves as fallible, when the world stops playing by the rules you thought you understood. The song moves through memory in fragments. Parents who wanted stardom, hands that came up empty, tall figures who always got their way. Lennon's voice carries no anger here, just a kind of clear-eyed recognition. The chorus offers no comfort, only permission: don't feel sorry, don't worry. The piano stays spare and direct, letting the lyric do the work. It is a song about growing up that treats that loss without sentimentality, and without pretence that it can be undone.
