About This Track

Joji pairs her voice with producer Clams Casino on 'NITROUS', a track built around the metaphor of speed and emotional numbness. The song moves with an upbeat tempo, its beat propulsive, whilst the lyrics sketch a portrait of someone moving too fast to feel anything at all. References to motorcycles and driving fold into the emotional register: love, pain, and connection all blur into sensation without consequence. She sings of being "out of sight", of insides "loud like motorcycles", of sitting in a Rover where nothing can touch her. The refrain is simple and insistent, a mantra of dissociation. What emerges is a study in avoidance dressed up as motion. The song acknowledges the cost of this speed, the nervousness and coldness that come with refusing to slow down, yet the production keeps everything moving forward, bright and propulsive. It's a contradiction held in place by Joji's measured delivery, which never quite lets the emotional weight of the lyrics overwhelm the surface gloss of the beat.

"NITROUS" is a track by Joji, from the album Nectar, released 24th September 2020. The track is 2:12 long. It's filed under Alternative. Full lyrics are available below.

Lyrics

NITROUS

Oh, understand, girl, I'm out of sight
To the other side, I don't want no stripes
Got my insides loud like motorcycles
Girl, don't notice it, I don't notice it

And the love make me wanna sing, sing
And the high make me wanna sing, sing
And the pain make me wanna blink, blink
But I'm in a Rover, I won't feel a thing

Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey

Guess I've been awake thinking 'bout our fate
Fighting two devils, blood in my toothpaste
Spit into the night (ooh) thought it would be nice (ooh)
You just make me nervous, you were cold as ice (you're cold)

I was in your town, drivin' eighty miles
Do not even notice, do not even frown
And how could I deserve this?
I'm never slowin' down (never slowin' down)
Don't love me at the surface
Love me like it's now (love me, love me, love me, love me)

Oh, understand, girl, I'm out of sight
To the other side, I don't want no stripes
Got my insides loud like motorcycles
Girl, don't notice it, I don't notice it

And the love make me wanna sing, sing
And the high make me wanna sing, sing
And the pain make me wanna blink, blink
But I'm in a Rover, I won't feel a thing
