About This Track

Released on 25 September 2020 as the eleventh track from Joji's second album 'Nectar', 'Pretty Boy' pairs the artist with Lil Yachty, the two having known each other at least since a 2017 interview for the 88rising YouTube channel. The collaboration marks their first musical work together, accompanied by a complete music video that arrived alongside the album. Joji adopts the persona of a West Coast figure living loud enough to mask whatever runs beneath the surface, the chorus built around the contrast between outward bravado and concealed emotion. Lil Yachty's verse mirrors the theme, a handsome young man flexing online and off whilst acknowledging that his real thoughts remain hidden, the performance hinging on the gap between image and interior life. The production allows both artists to occupy the same space of performed confidence and unspoken weight, the hills that burn bright serving as backdrop to a lifestyle that permits no visible tears.
