About This Track
The lead single from Joji's debut studio album, released in May 2018. Written and produced solely by Joji, the track arrived ahead of 'Ballads 1' and established the lo-fi, emotionally raw template he would refine across the full-length.
The lyric adopts the voice of someone moving through a breakup by choosing self-destruction over introspection. Joji repeats the opening declaration of intent, then sketches a night out with someone indifferent to the outcome, the refrain 'yeah right' functioning as both sarcasm and resignation. The verses acknowledge the mismatch plainly: she doesn't care, they won't be together, he visits her when he feels incomplete. The tone stays flat even as the subject spirals.
Stripped production leaves the vocal exposed, the rhythm minimal. The repetition and the monotone delivery turn what might be a confession into something closer to a mantra, the speaker talking himself into numbness rather than catharsis.
