'Candidate' moves through states of moral collapse and coercion. The song tracks a speaker stripped of agency, forced by circumstance into complicity, watching their own values erode. Pressure mounts; memory corrupts; power drains away. The chorus pivots to accusation, a confrontation with someone who has drawn the speaker into wrongdoing, then dismissed them. The track carries an unfinished quality, built from a jam that Ian Curtis later added vocals to. That roughness serves it well. The repetition of "I tried to get to you" in the outro becomes less plea than indictment, the phrase worn smooth by repetition until it sounds almost hollow. There is no resolution here, only the weight of complicity and the distance between two people who cannot meet.
