About This Track
A meditation on apathy and mortality, 'Insight' unfolds over a gentle but driving rhythm section. Ian Curtis adopts the voice of someone who has surrendered to despair, repeating the refrain "I'm not afraid anymore" as both confession and warning. The song dwells on wasted time, on the habits and judgements of others, and on a kind of resigned detachment from living itself. It is perhaps the most explicit reckoning with death on the album, yet it arrives without drama or crescendo, which makes it all the more unsettling. The track builds its power through restraint. There is no chorus, only the accumulation of Curtis's observations and the steady pulse beneath them. Memory haunts the song; he returns again and again to youth, to a moment when things felt different, when there was still something to want. That contrast between past vitality and present numbness gives the song its emotional weight, even as the music remains measured and controlled.
