About This Track
'Sleepyhead' finds Jutes caught between desire and dread, constructing a love song that doubles as a portrait of anxiety. The track moves through intimate scenes of closeness, cigarette smoke, whispered reassurance in darkness, but fractures them with intrusive thoughts and catastrophic spirals. He wants to stay asleep in someone's arms; waking means abandonment. The production, by Alex Niceforo and Keith Sorrells, holds a measured tension, letting the emotional weight sit without resolution. What makes the song work is its refusal to separate romance from mental turbulence. Jutes doesn't pretend the two are unrelated. He manifests lightning when the sun comes out, hears sirens when things go well, treats his own mind as an unreliable narrator. The chorus, "I'd die in my sleep / To live in your arms", isn't hyperbole dressed as poetry; it's the literal shape of his thinking. He needs another person to interrupt the spiral, but doubts they'll stay. That vulnerability, unadorned and repetitive, is the song's anchor.
