About This Track
Released in October 1985 as the second single from 'Hounds of Love', 'Cloudbusting' reached number twenty in the UK and spent eight weeks on the chart. The track followed 'Running Up That Hill', which had peaked at number three earlier that year and given Bush her biggest commercial success to date. Bush sings of Orgonon, her voice tracing the shape of memory and loss through imagery both tender and oblique. 'You're like my yo-yo / that glowed in the dark / what made it special / made it dangerous / so I bury it and forget,' she offers, before the chorus opens into a mantra of anticipation: 'I just know that something good is going to happen / and I don't know when / but just saying it could even make it happen.' The repetition accumulates force without ever tipping into insistence, the lyric holding faith and uncertainty in the same breath. The production, written and handled by Bush herself, carries the song's emotional architecture with precision, each element measured to support the central refrain's quiet, gathering hope.
