About This Track

Lizzo's title track is a direct address to anyone feeling overlooked or broken. She opens with the weight of online judgment, the particular scrutiny that comes with visibility, then pivots to something larger: a declaration that everyone deserves to know they matter. The song moves between her own experience of isolation and a wider call for compassion, asking why we throw stones at those whose pain we haven't lived through. The chorus is simple and insistent. "You're special" repeats like a mantra, a counterweight to the shame and loneliness she names in the verses. There's no irony here, no protective distance. It's an earnest piece of work, built on the idea that affirmation, especially from someone who has felt that aloneness herself, might actually land differently. A remix featuring SZA was released in early 2023.
