About This Track

'Yoke' by Medium Build is an alternative track from the 'Marietta - EP' (2024). The lyrics look at a relationship to pressure and obligation, with images of scarcity and security, then a turn towards dogma and resentment. Lines such as “the yoke was so heavy” frame the song’s sense of weight, while references to waiting and trading personal time suggest a reluctant bargain. The mood is accusatory and rueful, moving from blunt appraisal, to moral heaviness, to a hard-edged inventory of what was given away.

"Yoke" is a single by Medium Build, from the album Marietta - EP, released 15th November 2024. The track is 3:53 long. It's filed under Alternative. Full lyrics are available below.

Lyrics

Yoke

I guess it was better than the alternative
Plenty wanted more than us
Always a roof, always food to eat
Plenty of dogma-stained love
'Cause the yoke was so heavy
Yeah, the yoke was so
Three months away, saving savages
A dozen white bought memories
I gave them my youth, made some lifelong friends
Who no longer acknowledge me
'Cause the yoke was so heavy
Yeah, the yoke was so
Out on my own, signing lease agreements
Flexing my agency
Wondering how I would fail without
The invisible man guiding me
'Cause the yoke was so heavy
Yeah, the yoke was so
Yeah, the yoke was so heavy
Yeah, the yoke was so
