'Lately' finds mgk revisiting the weight of his difficult childhood, tracing a line from deprivation to present instability. He recalls sleeping arrangements shared in poverty, a mother's abandonment, and the promise he made himself never to return to that place. The song moves between confession and self-awareness, acknowledging how those early fractures have shaped his behaviour towards people who've tried to love him, and how he performs contentment in public whilst struggling privately. The track sits in the space between self-examination and self-sabotage. mgk names the demons that keep him awake at night, distinguishing between the literal and the metaphorical, between inherited trauma and the choices he's made in response to it. There's no redemption arc here, only the difficult admission that change is hard, that he's still trying, and that the distance between who he wants to be and who he is remains a chasm he hasn't yet crossed.
"LATELY" is a track by mgk, from the album BINGE, released 20th September 2018. The track is 3:14 long. It's filed under Hip-Hop/Rap. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 1 article about mgk.
