About This Track
The fourth track on Nirvana's second studio album, released in September 1991, 'Breed' was written by Kurt Cobain and originally carried the working title 'Imodium'. The demo version moved at a slower tempo before the band locked into the sprinting, two-minute-fifty thrash that made the final cut. Cobain's lyric scrambles pronouns and negations into a blur of refusal. 'I don't care, I don't care if it's old,' he repeats, the verses stacking denials until the chorus flips the logic sideways: 'We don't have to breed / We could plant a house, we could build a tree.' The absurdist reversal lands like sarcasm, the post-chorus reduced to a chanted 'She said' on loop, no further elaboration offered. The track was certified gold by the RIAA in December 2024, three decades after its first appearance on an album that redrew the commercial map for alternative rock.
