About This Track

The ninth track on Nirvana's second studio album 'Nevermind', 'Lounge Act' takes its name from the band's sense that it sounded like something they might play in a lounge. The song arrived on a record credited with bringing grunge to the mainstream, though its own shape anticipates the post-grunge wave that followed in the mid-1990s.

Kurt Cobain writes about jealousy and the residue of another presence, the chorus built around a recurring suspicion: "I'll go out of my way to prove I still / Smell her on you." The lyric toggles between defiance and concession, a pact proposed in the final verse to learn from whoever they want without new rules, the possessiveness acknowledged but not quite resolved.
