About This Track

'Pool' is a dark love song wrapped in the album's characteristic tropical sheen. The melody, one of the first written for 'After Laughter', was started by Taylor York and completed by him alongside Zac Farro. Over bright production from Justin Meldal-Johnsen and York, Hayley Williams sings about compulsion and drowning, the kind of devotion that pulls you under even when you know better. "I'm underwater / No air in my lungs / My eyes are open / And I'm giving up," she repeats, the chorus a surrender disguised as acceptance. The song sits at the heart of 'After Laughter''s central tension: music that sounds like escape, lyrics that admit there is none. Williams describes diving back into a relationship despite knowing the damage, unable to resist the pull. The repetition in the final verses, "Dive right back into you", becomes almost hypnotic, a loop of desire and helplessness. A Dork five-star record, 'After Laughter' is ok with not being ok, and 'Pool' is where that contradiction cuts deepest.

"Pool" is a track by Paramore, from the album After Laughter, released 11th May 2017. The track is 3:53 long. It's filed under Alternative. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 20 articles about Paramore.

Lyrics

Pool

As if the first cut wasn't deep enough
I dove in again 'cause I'm not into giving up
Could've gotten the same rush from any lover's touch
Why get used to something new?
'Cause no one breaks my heart like you

When you kiss me, I wish we could see what happens next
For a moment, I can forget what happens in my head
If I doubt you, will you come through
With a happy second chance, a happy ending
But this time you don't leave me sinking

I'm underwater
No air in my lungs
My eyes are open
And I'm giving up
You are the wave
I could never tame
If I survive
I'll dive back in

As if the first blood didn't thrill enough
I went further out to see what else was left of us
Never found the deep end of our little ocean
Drain the fantasy of you
Headfirst into shallow pools

And I wonder, is it better to get it over with?
The illusion can shatter before we begin
If you're really sorry
Happy second chance
I think I could forgive
This time you won't leave me sinking

I'm underwater
No air in my lungs
My eyes are open
And I'm giving up
You are the wave
I could never tame
If I survive
I'll dive back in

Dive back into
Right back into
Dive right back into you
And now I know you
Now I know you
Now that I know you
Dive right back into you

Back into you
Right back into you
Dive right back into you
And now I know you
Now I know you
Now that I know you
Dive right back into you

I'm underwater
No air in my lungs
My eyes are open
And I'm giving up
You are the wave
I could never tame
If I survive
I'll dive back in

I'm underwater
No air in my lungs
My eyes are open
I'm done giving up
You are the wave
I could never tame
If I survive
I'll dive back in

I'll dive back in
I'll dive back

Was ‘Truth Decay’ You Me At Six’s reset, or their comfort zone?

You Me At Six deliberately returned to their emo roots on 2023’s ‘Truth Decay’. It gave the band a clearer identity after ‘SUCKAPUNCH’, while leaving open the question of how far backwards was too far.
