Eddie Vedder's lyrics sketch a portrait of unchecked appetite dressed up as progress. The song moves through a series of self-justifications, each one peeling back another layer of moral convenience: the man who kills because faith permits it, the thief who sings in church, the coloniser who sees himself as simply more evolved. Stone Gossard's music matches this with a propulsive, almost celebratory energy that makes the hypocrisy audible rather than stated. The genius is in that tension. Vedder doesn't preach against the character he inhabits; instead he lets the character's own words expose the circular logic, the way appetite gets repackaged as destiny, the way "it's evolution, baby" becomes a shrug that excuses everything. The song moves at a clip, urgent and driving, which only sharpens the contrast between its surface momentum and what it's actually saying about the stories we tell ourselves to justify what we want.
