About This Track

'St. Patrick' arrives as the opening statement on PVRIS's debut album, a track built around the pull of chemical attraction and the difficulty of letting go. The song frames desire as something beyond rational control, a force that keeps the narrator clinging even as they recognise its grip. There's a spiritual paradox at its heart: the narrator claims no faith, yet describes their object of affection as "a saint and an angel", "a glimpse of bliss, a little taste of heaven". The contradiction sits unresolved, which is rather the point. Lyrically, the song moves between present tense longing and past tense loss. Early verses speak of needing "a miracle to get away", but by the final section, the narrator admits the person is gone and they're still waiting. It's a small but devastating shift, the realisation that the chemical bond persists even in absence. The production keeps things relatively spare, letting the vocal melody and the repetition of "you give me something to talk about" do the heavy lifting, turning obsession into something almost conversational.

"St. Patrick" is a single by PVRIS, from the album White Noise, released 31st October 2014. The track is 4:21 long. It's filed under Rock. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 20 articles about PVRIS.

Lyrics

St. Patrick

You give me something to talk about, something to talk about (hey)

(Hey, hey)

I know it's chemicals that make me cling to you, cling to you
Ooh, and I need a miracle to get away from you, away from you

I know it's chemicals (that make me cling to you, cling to you)
And I need a miracle (I gotta stay with you, stay with you)
And I'm not spiritual (but please stay)
'Cause I think you're a saint and I think you're an angel

I said, ooh, ooh
You give me something to talk about, something to talk about
I said, ooh, ooh, ooh
You give me something to think about
That's not the shit in my head

You're a miracle

You're a miracle, a miracle

Transparent hands were at my neck, at my neck, at my
Ooh, but I love the way you let me breathe instead, breathe instead

Take in your chemicals (that make me cling to you, cling to you)
You are a miracle (I gotta stay with you, stay with you)
And I'm not spiritual (But please stay)
'Cause you're a glimpse of bliss, a little taste of heaven

I said, ooh, ooh
You give me something to talk about, something to talk about (hey, hey)
I said, ooh, ooh, ooh
You give me something to think about
That's not the shit in my head

You're a miracle
You're a miracle, a miracle

I said, ooh, ooh
You give me something to talk about, something to talk about
I said, ooh, ooh, ooh
You give me something to think about
That's not the shit in my head

I need a miracle to bring me back to you, back to you
Ooh, I know you're gone now, but I still wait for you, wait for you

(Hey, hey)

I said, ooh, ooh
You give me something to talk about, something to talk about (hey, hey)
I said, ooh, ooh, ooh
You give me something to think about
That's not the shit in my head

You're a miracle
You're a miracle, a miracle

I still wait, I still wait for you
Ooh, I know you're gone now, but I still wait for you, wait for you

PVRIS’ second album began as an intimidating act of exposure. Between 2017 and 2019, Lynn Gunn described how sharing unresolved feelings became healing, even as vocal difficulties made its touring cycle painfully difficult.
