The opening track to 'In Rainbows' builds from an electronic beat to a full band number with warm guitar tones and propelling bass. Produced by Nigel Godrich, the song was written in 2005 during what the band described as a mad rhythm experiment. The result features a quintuple meter and a handclap rhythm inspired by Peaches' 'Fuck the Pain Away', with cheers and clapping contributed by children from the Matrix Music School and Arts Centre in Oxford. Lyrically, it's a song about love and betrayal, as well as the repetition of failed pursuits. Thom Yorke returns again and again to questions of circular motion and severed connection, the title invoking both a counted descent and the moment before a sheer drop. The track received acclaim from music critics, who praised its propulsive energy and the way it announced a more rhythmically adventurous phase for the band.
