Rammstein have announced their new album, 'Zeit'
Following three years after their untitled album, their eighth full-length is set for release on 29th April, preceded by the title track.
About This Track
Released in September 2004 as the second single from Rammstein's fourth album 'Reise, Reise', 'Amerika' is a satirical commentary on American cultural dominance and the misconceptions surrounding the American utopia. The track peaked at number two in Germany and entered the top five in Austria, Denmark, and Switzerland. The song's bilingual construction, verses in German, chorus in English, mirrors its subject. Rammstein adopt the voice of cultural imperialism itself, the lyrics listing Coca-Cola, Mickey Mouse, and Santa Claus as exports, the refrain 'We're all living in Amerika' delivered as both observation and complaint. The band frame the track explicitly as critique rather than celebration, the bridge insisting 'This is not a love song'. The irony extends to form: Rammstein sing largely in German but switch to English for the chorus, the very act of code-switching a small concession to the globalised pop grammar the song interrogates. The final verse adds 'sometimes war' to the list of American exports, the understatement doing more work than volume.
