About This Track
'Angst' channels a childhood bogeyman into something far more sinister. Rammstein build the track around a German folk threat, the "black man" invoked by parents to keep children obedient, but the song treats it as a template for how fear itself propagates through a society. The lyrics trace the mechanism: a threat whispered in darkness becomes collective paranoia, becomes armed vigilance, becomes the thing we all believe in without question. The band's industrial machinery grinds beneath this escalation, matching the physical symptoms of dread, wet backs, clammy hands, sleepless nights, with mechanical precision. What emerges is less a song about a supernatural menace than about the machinery of fear itself, how it spreads from one generation to the next, how it justifies suspicion and violence. Rammstein repeat the opening question like a chant, turning it into something closer to an accusation. The song doesn't resolve the fear; it documents how fear becomes the operating system of a culture.
