About This Track
Released as the second single from Rex Orange County's third studio album 'Pony' in October 2019, 'Pluto Projector' is a meditation on self-doubt and the comfort of intimacy. The track, which Rex wrote and produced with Ben Baptie, opens with existential questions about purpose and legacy before pivoting to the steadying presence of a partner who knows him completely.
The arrangement is semi-downtempo and acoustic, built around Rex's voice as he moves from anxious introspection to tentative gratitude. He sings of feeling at home when he's around someone, of sublime connection that still feels like a honeymoon, yet admits he's 'still a boy inside my thoughts' and uncertain whether he's meant to understand his own faults. The outro stretches the promise to grow into self-knowledge, repeating the hope that one day he'll manage the same clarity his partner seems to possess.
It's a love letter structured as much around vulnerability as devotion, the projector of the title offering everything whilst the singer wonders if he'll ever catch up to the person beside him.
