Salem - Salem II EP
Quite simply no holds barred fun.
About This Track
'Trapdoor' moves through states of intoxication and dissociation with a kind of blunt momentum. The production, courtesy of Jack Donoghue, sits somewhere between hip-hop and the darker electronic textures Salem would become known for; the track builds its weight from repetition and texture rather than conventional hooks. The vocal delivery is deliberately slurred, almost conversational, as though the narrator is working through a night that refuses to resolve. The lyrics pivot between scenes of numbness and escape, touching on themes of disconnection and self-harm with an unflinching directness. There's no redemption arc here, no neat conclusion; instead the song circles back to its refrain, the speaker caught between the desire to leave and the paralysis that keeps them in place. It's uncomfortable listening, which appears to be precisely the point.
