About This Track

A Latin pop ballad built around the metaphor of colour as emotion, 'Amarillo' finds Shakira articulating the all-consuming nature of love. Yellow for possession, purple for the past shed away, red for tears, blue for devotion without limit, gold for the refusal to let go. The song moves through a spectrum of feeling, each hue a different register of attachment and longing. Lyrically she constructs love as something irrational and total, a state in which objectivity becomes impossible and the beloved becomes the whole world. The production, courtesy of Luis Fernando Ochoa and Supa Dups, sits behind rather than beneath the vocal.
