About This Track

Neil Halstead wrote 'Dagger' during a retreat to a Welsh cottage in the summer of 1992, crafting what would become the closing track on Souvlaki. The song emerged from a turbulent relationship, its lyrics casting Halstead as an instrument of hurt: numb, wounding, unable to bridge the distance between two people. Slowdive never released it as a single, never performed it live, yet it became one of their signature songs by sheer force of its stark, dark beauty. The track stands apart from everything else on the album. Where Souvlaki trades in cosmic grandeur and textural wash, 'Dagger' strips back to something more direct and wounded. Halstead's voice carries the weight of someone caught between sleep and waking, between love and the inability to feel it properly. The song's repetition, its whispered confessions and insistent refrain, builds an emotional architecture that feels both intimate and unreachable, a fitting coda to the album's arc.

"Dagger" is a track by Slowdive, from the album Souvlaki, released 31st May 1993. The track is 3:35 long. It's filed under Alternative. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 1 article about Slowdive.

Lyrics

Dagger

The sunshine girl is sleeping
She falls and dreams alone
And me I am her dagger
Too numb to feel her pain

The world is full of noise yeah
I hear it all the time
And me I am your dagger
You know I am your wound
I thought I heard you whisper
It happens all the time
I thought I heard you whisper
It happens all the time

She whispers while I'm sleeping:
"I love you when you smile"
I didn't really lose you
I just lost it for a while

The world is full of noise yeah
I hear it all the time
You know I am your dagger
You know I am your wound
I thought I heard you whisper
It happens all the time
I thought I heard you whisper
It happens all the time
