About This Track

'Machine Gun' unfolds as one of the most ethereally dreamy shoegaze tracks on Souvlaki. Written by Neil Halstead, it moves through layers of reverb and haze, the vocals surfacing and receding like something half-remembered. Water becomes the song's emotional anchor, dragged through the lyrics as both weight and solace, a force that simultaneously pulls down and restores. The imagery drifts between the personal and the mythic. References to Sheba arrive without explanation, their historical resonance (the ancient kingdom and its great dam, which sustained an agricultural civilisation) left to float beneath the song's dreaming surface. What matters is the feeling: the way the water makes you feel again, repetition itself becoming a kind of spell.
