About This Track

'Sponge' by Superheaven is a 2013 rock track from the album 'Jar'. The lyrics find a narrator wrestling with responsibility and masculinity, with images of being drained and inadequate, epitomised by the line “a wet sponge”. There is a strong pull towards escape, but it comes with reluctance and resignation, as if running is both desired and blocked. The voice sounds spent rather than triumphant, moving from self-critique to a tense sense of being stuck on the move.
