About This Track

A deluxe-edition bonus track from 'Ctrl', released in 2022 to mark the album's fifth anniversary. The song samples Donna Summer's 'Spring Reprise', threading a disco-era warmth through SZA's meditation on surrender and uncertain devotion. The lyrics circle a familiar tension: the desire to be noticed, to be chosen, to be enough. SZA asks 'Do you even know I'm alive?', the repetition turning the question into a kind of mantra, whilst promising she's 'down for the ride' and willing to be taken anywhere. The tone hovers between hope and resignation, the push-pull of wanting someone who may not be looking back. It's a quieter moment in the 'Ctrl' expanded tracklist, built around that looped vocal refrain and the idea of just going with the flow, even when the destination remains unclear.

"Anything" is a track by SZA, from the album Ctrl, released 8th June 2017. The track is 2:29 long. It's filed under R&B/Soul. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 20 articles about SZA.

Lyrics

Anything

Maybe I should kill my inhibition
Maybe I'll be perfect in a new dimension

Maybe I should pray a little harder
Or work a little smarter
This time baby promise I have learned my lesson, ooh

Down for the ride, down for the ride
You could take me anywhere
Do-do-do, down for the ride, down for the ride
You could take me anywhere
I hope you will, I hope you will, I hope you will

Keeping up is hard to do
Even harder feeling heavy, steady chasing you
Beep beep, why are you looking around, you lonely?
I feel you coming down like honey
Do-do you even know I'm alive?
Do-do you even know I, I

Maybe I should pray a little harder
Or work a little smarter
This time baby promise I have learned my lesson, ooh

Down for the ride, down for the ride
You could take me anywhere
Do-do-do down for the ride, down for the ride
You could take me anywhere
I hope you will, I hope you will, I hope you will

Do-do you even know I'm alive?
Do-do you even know I, I
Do-do you even know I'm alive?
Do-do you even know I, I
Do-do you even know I'm alive?
Do-do you even know I, I
Do-do you even know I'm alive?

Do-do you even know I, I
Do-do you even know I'm alive?
Do-do you even know I, I
Do-do you even know I'm alive?
Do-do you even know I, I
Do you know I'm alive?
Do you even know?

It feels like SZA could do anything next, as she takes on London's O2 Arena

There’s a pop dungeon where artists live, sometimes for years, where they say, “it’s coming!” about an album that’s in the works (ahem, Rihanna, ahem, Sky Ferreira). SZA did a stint down there after releasing her cult and critical fave debut ‘Ctrl’ in 2017.
