'Higher' opens Tems' 2020 EP 'For Broken Ears' with a slow-burning meditation on detachment and self-preservation. Produced by Tejiri Akpoghene, the track finds the Nigerian singer addressing someone who has returned seeking comfort after a crisis, only to be met with a boundary she will not cross. Tems sings of waiting, but from a distance that feels newly earned. The lyrics move between confrontation and escape, questioning the listener's motives whilst asserting a need to rise above the chaos. There is a sense of someone who has been pulled into conflict before and now chooses flight over engagement, the refrain of ascent ('running away to the land of discovery') framing withdrawal as a form of progress. The production allows space for introspection, the tempo measured against the urgency of the subject matter. The contrast with 'Damages', the EP's mid-tempo lead single, is deliberate. Where that track celebrates breaking free from toxicity with a dance-floor energy, 'Higher' lingers in the moment before departure, the decision made but the weight of it still present.
