The xx’s comeback makes room for three solo careers
The xx’s Coachella return did not treat seven years of solo work as an interruption. A medley of Romy, Oliver Sim and Jamie xx material suggested a band returning with more routes into itself.

A Dork five-star record. 'Performance' arrives as 'I See You' pivots away from the ambient restraint of The xx's earlier work, embracing the denser, sample-driven production that Jamie xx explored on his solo material. Where the album's opening tracks signal this shift most boldly, 'Performance' holds closer to the band's roots, though it carries the new sound's weight throughout. The track opens with a synthesizer and bass riff that sets a dark, introspective mood, Romy Croft's voice entering with a question that frames the song's emotional core: the gap between what we show and what we feel. The lyrics trace the performance of resilience in the face of abandonment, each verse asking whether disguise, movement, or departure might finally earn notice. The chorus circles back to the same refrain: a brave face maintained not for an audience that has stopped looking, but for herself. A violin surfaces in the arrangement, its sound anguished and spare, reinforcing the tension between the song's quiet beauty and the hurt it contains. It is among the album's most delicate moments, and proof that 'I See You' need not abandon subtlety to prove its point.
"Performance" is a track by The xx, from the album I See You, released 13th January 2017. The track is 4:06 long. It's filed under Alternative. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 15 articles about The xx.

The xx’s Coachella return did not treat seven years of solo work as an interruption. A medley of Romy, Oliver Sim and Jamie xx material suggested a band returning with more routes into itself.

From a Dua Lipa and Silk City co-write to ‘Lifetime’, ‘Lights Out’, ‘Strong’ and a pop-minded Live Lounge session, Romy’s route into dance-pop is there in the credits and collaborations.

The expanded edition preserves all 11 original tracks, adds three live performances and gives The xx’s 2022 reflections on the album a little more room to land.

Bastille paired The xx’s ‘Angels’ with TLC’s ‘No Scrubs’ on an early mixtape, before bringing ‘No Angels’ to the expanded ‘Bad Blood X’ in 2023.

Across debut-packed sets, carefully chosen guests and a Roundhouse show built around release rather than nostalgia, Hayley Williams gave her solo material its own room to breathe.

Oliver Sim’s first solo single, ‘Romance With A Memory’, arrived in March 2022 with monsters, a horror-themed radio show and a lyric video starring Charity Kase, HoSo Terra Toma and Gena Marvin. The presentation drew directly on the horror films and personal experiences that informed his early solo demos.
