About This Track
The fourth track from Fear Inoculum arrives thirteen years after Tool's previous album, with all but one member of the band in their fifties by the time of release. The song addresses that passage directly, adopting the voice of a warrior whose armour is wearing thin, who struggles to remain consequential. Maynard James Keenan invokes Ponce de León's phantom soul, the mythical fountains of youth pursued in vain whilst time bears down. The lyric moves between defiant pride in past victories and the recognition that relevance must now be fought for rather than assumed. The band debuted the track live at Welcome to Rockville in Jacksonville in May 2019, several months before the album's arrival. At over twelve minutes, it sustains a single meditation on ageing and creative endurance, the repetition itself enacting the struggle it describes.
