About This Track
A Dork four-star record, 'How Long?' arrives after six years of anticipation, arriving as part of the band's return to the album format. The track sits comfortably within Vampire Weekend's lineage of bright, peppery indie rock, yet it refuses to feel like a simple retread. There's a restlessness to it; the rhythm drops away after the opening verse, replaced by playful sound effects and a sway that invites movement. Jazz inflections colour the arrangement, giving the song a sophistication that feels earned rather than affected. Lyrically, Koenig surveys a relationship in collapse with a particular kind of dark humour. He moves from the specific wound, a broken heart at midnight mass, to the broader absurdity of the situation, questioning the point of human beings themselves. The chorus refrain, "How long 'til we sink to the bottom of the sea?", carries both resignation and a strange tenderness, as if the only comfort left is the prospect of drowning together. It's melancholy dressed up in a dance beat, which is perhaps the truest expression of what Vampire Weekend have always done best.
