A spare acoustic sketch from XXXTENTACION's 'SKINS', released in December 2018, 'difference (interlude)' runs just seventy-six seconds and strips the production to its frame. The vocal sits over guitar and little else, the brevity lending the performance a demo-like intimacy that Slant Magazine called haunting. It is the second-shortest track on the album, behind the half-minute 'Introduction'. The lyric is a loop of promise and reassurance, XXXTENTACION offering 'wedding rings' and insisting 'I'll be different' across two verses before the words dissolve into wordless melody. The repetition feels less like insistence than incantation, the simplicity of the gesture carrying more weight than elaboration might. Distance is dismissed; commitment is pledged in plain terms, the interlude closing before the thought can complicate itself.
