Warpaint – Radiate Like This

  • Martyn Young
  • May 4, 2022

Label: Heirlooms / Virgin Records
Released: 6th May 2022

It’s been six long years since Warpaint last released an album and how have we missed them. The four-piece have always had their own alluring mystique since they emerged as one of the hottest acts of 2010, and ‘Radiate Like This’ is a welcome reminder that we’re still dealing with a very special band.

The album features all the hallmarks of the Warpaint sound with vibes to the foreground and a gauzy haziness that envelops the songs giving them a woozy kind of attraction, see for example the sparse dynamics and atmospheric groove of ‘Like Sweetness’. Warpaint excel in making a little go a very long way and their delicate approach to melding their clever instrumentation and gorgeous harmonies together gives something distinctive and compelling. This is an album to immerse yourself in and let the Warpaint sound wash over you. There’s a collective spirit at work throughout the record, one of sensitivity, empathy and self care as exemplified on the striking dance floor filling lead track ‘Champion’.

All four of the members of Warpaint have established themselves as gifted artists in their own right with various solo projects and collaborative endeavours, but when Stella, Emily, Jenny Lee and Theresa come together there’s nothing else quite like it.
