Blossoms are an English indie rock band from Stockport, Greater Manchester. The band was formed in 2013 and includes Tom Ogden (lead vocals, guitar), Charlie Salt (bass guitar, backing vocals), Josh Dewhurst (lead guitar, percussion), Joe Donovan (drums), and Myles Kellock (keyboards, synthesizer, backing vocals). They appeared on the BBC's Sound Of new music list in 2016, finishing in fourth place. Their self-titled debut album was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2017. In the same year, they received a nomination for British Breakthrough Act at the Brit Awards. They have achieved five top 5 albums in the UK, four of which reached number one.

Blossoms are a band that fit the mould of indie superstars to a T. With their distinctive swagger and polished pop sound, the outfit take to the stage ready to live the rock and roll dream. Setting off smoke flares within seconds of their entrance, the crowd are raring to do exactly the same. Introducing a different member of the band between each song ("I know it's not Drake, but..."), making the audience 'boo' a girl named Molly who recently dumped their friend Gaz, and guiding a crowd sing along that falls slightly flat (not that it matters, everyone's having a good time here), Tom Ogden is every ounce the charismatic frontman. The band wear their influences on their sleeves: the weighted riffs of The Beatles' 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)' work their way into the end of a song, while cover renditions of John Lennon's 'Imagine' and The Smiths' 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out' have the field swaying where they're stood. Where the band shine brightest, however, is with their own sleekly polished anthems. Closing number 'Charlemagne' bubbles and gleams, showcasing a band with a knack for contagion that can drown out even the harshest critics.

If we wanted to take notes, there's a lesson for us all in Blossoms. On the surface, they're a straight down the line northern indie band. The latest in a templated run, a blast from the past supposedly an irrelevance in 2016. And yet they've achieved a number one album and packed out Reading's second stage. The standards are all there - an assertion of their Stockport roots, a shoutout for each member and their instrument in turn from frontman Tom Ogden between songs. The supposed rule book says this isn't where music is going. An echo of an age cast aside. The rule book, clearly, has been trying on its snooty pants a little too often. The beauty of Reading is its ability to hold a mirror up to what's really connecting with the world. And that's exactly what Blossoms have done. As gatekeepers sit inside their bubbles listening exclusively to other gatekeepers, all the time leading each other further away from their posts, it's bands like Blossoms that are still hoovering up the crowds left behind. And really, with those snobbish tendencies left behind, it's not hard to see why.& Breaking 'My Favourite Room' for a sing-a-long to Oasis' 'Half The World Away', they genuinely are speaking a language much of the music world has cast aside. Every cliche in the book is drawn out, and the crowd lap it up. Rather than blast over their heads, Blossoms talk on their level. They know better. The smart money follows the crowd.
