Héloïse Adélaïde Letissier, born on 1 June 1988 in Nantes, France, is a singer and songwriter known professionally as Christine and the Queens. She began learning piano at the age of four and was inspired by experiences in London while studying. Letissier released a series of extended plays between 2011 and 2013. Her debut studio album, Chaleur humaine, was released in 2014 and reached number two on the French and UK charts; it was certified diamond in France and was the best-selling debut record in the United Kingdom that year. Her second album, Chris, was released in 2018 and received widespread critical acclaim, being named album of the year by Clash, The Guardian, and The Independent, and appearing in the top ten of multiple year-end lists. The song "Girlfriend" was recognized by Time as the song of the year. In 2020, she released the EP La vita nuova, which critics considered her strongest work to that point, following the death of her mother. The song "People, I’ve Been Sad" was also named song of the year by Time.
