The O2 Institute is a music venue in the Digbeth district of Birmingham, housed in the ornate Digbeth Institute, which opened in 1908 as a church mission and has since served as a civic hall, a nightclub and a live venue. Now operated by Live Nation as part of the O2 Academy group, it runs as a multi-room complex: a 1,500-capacity main auditorium with balcony levels, a 500-capacity room below and a 250-capacity space above, allowing it to scale shows from club night to mid-sized gig under one terracotta facade. The building's musical life runs through its many guises, from the Sanctuary club nights of the late 1990s to its spell as the HMV Institute after a refurbishment in 2010, before the O2 rebrand in 2015. Today it is one of Birmingham's central stages for touring bands and dance events.
