About Jay Som

Melina Mae Cortez Duterte, born on March 25, 1994, is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and mixing engineer known by her stage name Jay Som. She began releasing music in 2012, initially presenting an indie rock sound. Her debut studio album, Turn Into, was released in mid-2016. Her second album, Everybody Works, was released in March 2017 on Double Denim Records and Polyvinyl Records. Her third studio album, Anak Ko, was released on August 23, 2019, via Polyvinyl, Lucky Number, and Inertia. Duterte was born in Walnut Creek, California, and spent most of her childhood in Pleasanton and Brentwood. She played trumpet and guitar growing up and started writing and recording music at age 12. She initially planned to attend a conservatory for jazz but decided to focus on songwriting instead.
