Rise Against is an American punk rock band from Chicago, formed in 1999. The group's current lineup includes vocalist and rhythm guitarist Tim McIlrath, lead guitarist Zach Blair, bassist Joe Principe, and drummer Brandon Barnes. Their music features melody, catchy hooks, an aggressive sound and playstyle, and rapid tempos. Lyrically, the band is known for social commentary on topics such as politics, animal rights, humanitarianism, and environmentalism. Rise Against initially signed with the independent label Fat Wreck Chords, releasing two albums: The Unraveling in 2001 and Revolutions per Minute in 2003. Both albums achieved underground success. In 2003, the band signed with DreamWorks, which was later absorbed by Geffen. Their major label debut, Siren Song of the Counter Culture (2004), gained mainstream success, driven by singles like "Give It All" and "Swing Life Away." The following album, The Sufferer & the Witness (2006), reached number ten on the Billboard 200 and was their first album to chart outside North America.
