The Decemberists are an American indie rock band from Portland, Oregon, formed in 2000. The band includes Colin Meloy (lead vocals, guitar), Chris Funk (guitar, multi-instrumentalist), Jenny Conlee (piano, keyboards, accordion, backing vocals), Nate Query (bass), and John Moen (drums). They have released nine studio albums as of 2024. Their lyrics often focus on historical incidents and folklore. Live performances frequently involve audience participation, with encores featuring whimsical reenactments of sea battles and other historical events or acts performed with members of the crowd. In 2011, their song 'Down by the Water' from the album The King Is Dead was nominated for Best Rock Song at the 54th Grammy Awards.
