William Robert Young, born on 20 January 1979, is an English singer, songwriter, and actor. He gained prominence after winning the first series of the ITV talent contest Pop Idol in 2002, becoming the first winner of the worldwide Idol franchise. His debut single, a double A-side consisting of 'Anything Is Possible' and 'Evergreen,' was released two weeks after the show's finale and became the fastest-selling debut single in the UK. Young also participated in World Idol, where he finished in fifth place and performed the song 'Light My Fire,' originally by the Doors. As a teenager, he studied politics at the University of Exeter before moving to London to study musical theatre at the Arts Educational Schools in Chiswick. He paused his studies in late 2001 to compete on Pop Idol. Following his victory, he released his debut album, 'From Now On,' in 2002, which reached number one on the UK charts. His second album, 'Friday's Child,' was released in 2003 and achieved multi-platinum status in the UK, producing three top-five singles.
