Perth trio Fool Nelson have arrived in the UK with scrappy indie-rock energy and the kind of live show that's already turned them into one of Australia's fastest-rising guitar bands. After sold-out tours back home, the childhood-friends-turned-band are finding audiences on the other side of the planet just as ready to yell the songs back at them.
"It's been a good balance of surprise and also things being like, 'Oh yeah, that's not too different'," says bassist and guitarist Darcy Steven, while having breakfast in Amsterdam ahead of the band's final stretch of UK dates. Fool Nelson have spent the past few weeks bouncing between headline shows, festivals and "a good amount of touristy moments"while getting their first proper taste of the UK. One standout came early. "Probably a highlight was the first headline show over here in London, that was pretty special."
That said, there has been one particularly welcome revelation. "I think we've just been surprised that people have actually come to the shows," he laughs. "Makes it a little bit better to play to a room that's got people in it."
For a band travelling from one of the most isolated corners of Australia to packed rooms in London, Brighton and beyond, there's still a slight disbelief to the whole operation. "The fact that we're able to be on the complete other side of the world playing music to people is a pretty special privilege that definitely isn't lost on us at this stage."
