Currently working on their third studio album,
Alabama Shakes have released '
American Dream', a politically charged new track that tackles abortion laws, environmental deregulation, gun violence, and the widening income gap.
The single is built around a slow, heavy psychedelic groove, with
Brittany Howard delivering vocals through layers of echo. It marks the band's second piece of new material since they reconvened, following '
Another Life', which arrived last year as their first original song in a decade.
Alabama Shakes had been inactive since 2018 before making an unannounced appearance at a Tuscaloosa benefit at the close of 2024. That surprise reunion set — their first live outing in seven years — kicked off a period of intense touring activity that continues with an extensive schedule of worldwide dates throughout 2025.
Speaking about the new track, Howard said: "It's a snapshot of what we're living through in 2026. I look around and wonder how we got to a place where there's so much strain and so little support. I mean, it shouldn't be impossible to take off work so you can bring your child to the doctor — that's actually insane. My hope is that one day people will hear this song and say, 'Yeah, shit was crazy back then, but we made it through.' We can hope, right?"
