Downtown Boys have announced ‘Public Luxury’ and shared defiant new single ‘No Me Jodas’

Providence-formed five-piece Downtown Boys have detailed 'Public Luxury', their forthcoming album and first since 'Cost of Living'.

Arriving on 26th June through Sub Pop, the record was co-produced by the band's Joey La Neve DeFrancesco alongside recording engineer Seth Manchester at Machines With Magnets, a Pawtucket, RI studio and arts space. Heba Kadry handled mastering duties.

Alongside the album announcement, the group have unveiled lead single 'No Me Jodas', accompanied by a John McKay-directed video that captures the band performing at a Brooklyn club.

Victoria Marie, the band's singer, explains the inspiration behind the clip: "The video for 'No Me Jodas' (translation: 'don't fuck with me') is inspired by the aesthetic of 'chicha' —a music culture out of Peru that is also about economics, work, partying, life, desire, and nightlife. The ethic, as put by one Chicha musician, Chacalón, is two words: chamba and vacilón (hard work and partying)."

Guitarist and singer DeFrancesco describes the creative direction taken with the new material: "This record is bigger and more expansive than anything we've done before. In writing this music, I tried to get closer to the feeling and sound of our live shows, which is where Downtown Boys is best experienced. When we perform, the guitars, keyboards, saxophones, the singing and intros, and the crowd yelling along with us all blend into a beautiful, cathartic energy. We wanted these songs to carry the depth of that live experience onto the recording itself."

'Public Luxury' features eleven tracks: 'No Me Jodas', 'The City Begins', 'Sirena', 'Yellow Sun', 'Viva La Rosa', 'Enemy Without', 'You're a Ghost', 'Albuterol', 'Mi Concha', 'Public Works', and 'Public Luxury'.
