New York-based duo
Lowertown - comprising
Olivia Osby and
Avsha Weinberg - have dropped
'Worst Friend', their latest offering ahead of new album
'Ugly Duckling Union', which arrives on 22nd May through Summer Shade.
Drawing on folk and country influences, the track features Osby and Weinberg exchanging verses before joining forces on its soaring chorus. A video accompanies the release, depicting the pair wandering through a deserted small town.
Speaking about the song, the duo said: "This song was written with our folk inspirations at heart, June and Johnny Cash, Dylan and Baez, trading verses about reaching the point where a lack of self awareness of one's shortcomings and accountability for one's mistakes can lead to pushing everyone away and your inevitable downfall. Self sabotage, inner darkness and aimlessness are common themes on Ugly Duckling Union."
Osby and Weinberg wrote, recorded, produced, and mixed the entirety of 'Ugly Duckling Union' themselves. The record is accompanied by a conceptual story, a playable Minecraft world, a handbook, plush dolls, and drawn comics by Doctor Nowhere (Silas Orion).
Osby added of its themes: "Our home has been the people who make us feel understood, and the music that makes us feel understood. I feel like Avsha and I have just been two misfits doing stuff together, and I feel like this music is for people like us—it's for the misfit toys."
Alongside the album, Lowertown are heading out on a North American headline tour beginning in late April and wrapping up at the end of June with a hometown appearance at Bowery Ballroom in New York.
