Olivia Rodrigo has released '
Drop Dead', the lead single from her third studio album '
You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love'. Produced by Dan Nigro and co-written with Amy Allen, the track sees Rodrigo discussing stalking a crush from bed, said crush being a Gemini, and the Cure's 'Just Like Heaven'.
An accompanying music video, directed by Petra Collins, was shot at the Palace of Versailles in Paris, where Rodrigo roams the historic halls carrying a pink guitar and wearing pink headphones.
Recently,
Robert Smith has revealed that he and
Olivia Rodrigo have spent time recording together, pointing towards a potential future collaboration between the two.
Writing in a feature for
British Vogue, Smith explained how he first connected with Rodrigo’s music after hearing her breakout single ‘
Drivers License’. From there, he sought out both of her albums. "Although most of the songs on those two albums are not really 'aimed at my demographic', they are all so good that it is hard not to fall in love with them," Smith wrote, adding that he "bought '
Sour', and then '
Guts' (both on CD!)".
Their link-up was solidified at
Glastonbury Festival 2025, where Smith joined Rodrigo during her headline set for renditions of ‘Friday I'm In Love’ and ‘Just Like Heaven’. Rodrigo introduced him on stage as "perhaps the greatest songwriter to come out of England" and "a personal hero of mine".
Since then, Smith says their relationship has only deepened. "She calls me up quite a bit to talk about clothes and fashion – and we have enjoyed a couple of memorable nights in the studio together," he said. "I can't wait to hear what she does next!"
British Vogue has described the forthcoming record as her "most experimental" yet. Speaking about its direction, Rodrigo said the new material is made up of "sad love songs", adding: "I realised all my favourite romantic love songs were beautiful because they had a tinge of fear or yearning in them."
She also pointed to her time in London as a key influence on the record. "I've found a lot of inspiration from being in London. I've spent so much time here over the course of making this album. It has a lot of songs that are London vibes, about experiences that I've had here," she said.
"It was a creative challenge to write from a joyful place. When you're experiencing that you're connected to someone, or feeling really good, you're not in your head thinking about bittersweet poems!"
Rodrigo is also lined up to both host and perform on Saturday Night Live on 2nd May.
