New Order is an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1980 by Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, and Stephen Morris, with Gillian Gilbert joining shortly after. The band was established following the disbandment of Joy Division, which had ended earlier that year after the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis. The members of New Order had previously been part of Joy Division. The band is known for blending post-punk and electronic dance music, which contributed to their recognition as influential figures in the 1980s and as pioneers of alternative dance. They served as the flagship band for Factory Records and its nightclub, The Haçienda. The band collaborated extensively with graphic designer Peter Saville on their album covers. Their early work was initially overshadowed by Joy Division's legacy, but their exposure to the New York club scene in the early 1980s led them to incorporate dance rhythms and electronic instrumentation into their music. Their 1983 single 'Blue Monday' became the best-selling 12-inch single of all time and a staple in clubs. During the 1980s, they released several albums, including Power, Corruption & Lies (1983), Substance (1987), and Technique (1989).
